High Lakes Car Club in La Pine, Oregon

Not Just About "Old Cars", it's About "Community"

Many people in La Pine and the surrounding area are familiar with The HIGH LAKES CAR CLUB...."Oh yeah, they're the ones who have the car show". But I wonder how many really know how involved we are in the community? Of course, Classic Cars are our passion! But we do much more in the area than host an Annual Show-N-Shine!

Three years ago our local Little Deschutes Grange was in danger of being closed down due to a lack of membership; They simply did not have enough members to keep the doors open! This would have meant losing all money & property to the State Grange, which would have been a real loss for La Pine. So they came to the Car Club for help. Several of our members joined the Grange immediately, saving this great community organization from closure, and we started holding our monthly meetings in their building. Today, many of our Car Club members are Officers in the Grange. They have added a monthly Flea Market and other events, and are no longer in danger of being closed down.

A couple of years ago, the La Pine Parks and Recreation District was in very real financial trouble, and needed help in making their large Insurance premium. They came to the Car Club for assistance. We were able to donate $1,000 from the Club, which was matched by Dave Hazeltine, our Car Club member, in memory of his late wife, Carolyn, who had been a beloved member of the club. This $2,000 got the Parks & Rec "over the hump" to survive until they could get additional funding.

Every year the High Lakes Car Club donates food, toys and money to the Christmas Baskets and the SCOOTR Toy Run. We also donate during the year to many other worthy organizations who are helping the people in our community: The Community Kitchen, Community Closet, La Pine Senior Center, Family & Community Together, Little Deschutes Grange, Future Business Leaders of America at the High School, the Cancer "Walk for Life", and many more.

Each year we participate in the Fourth of July Parade and the Christmas Light Parade. Last year at our June Car Show, we raffled off a 1971 4-speed Chevrolet pickup. Yes, a real one...in good running condition! We sold tickets at just $5 each (or 5 tickets for $20), because we were not as concerned about making a lot of money as we were in finding a home for this great pickup, and helping someone who might not be able to buy a pickup like this .

When the La Pine Rodeo Association, or the High School, or the Frontier Days, need convertibles to drive princesses or dignitaries in the Parade, or around the track or arena, or to make an entrance into their events, they call the Car Club. And we are always happy to help them out, whether it's the Fourth of July and blistering hot, or Homecoming and cold and rainy. We enjoy helping our community in whatever way we can.

We have ONLY TWO FUNDRAISERS during the year. We don't have bake sales, spaghetti feeds, or car washes. Not that we don't love bake sales and spaghetti feeds, we just don't have time. We only host The CLASSIC AUTOMOTIVE SWAP MEET, coming up on Saturday, May 12th, and our Annual HIGH LAKES SHOW-N-SHINE Car Show, on the last Saturday in June. Putting on these two events every year keeps us busy. Both of these events will be held at the La Pine Senior Activity Center again this year. Watch for the Posters! In the meantime, you may see several of our members serving food, washing dishes, or cleaning up, at other functions at the Senior Center.

The Classic Car enthusiasts who come to our Annual Show-N-Shine are not only from all parts of Oregon, but we have drawn entries from Reno, Nevada, Seattle, Washington, and parts of California. Classic car lovers will travel to wherever the great car shows are...and we've been told, by participants and vendors, that our show is one of the best! This is a boost to La Pine's economy and its image!

We have had a wonderful show of support each year from businesses and individuals in La Pine, Bend, Redmond, Gilchrist, Crescent, Chemult, Crescent Lake, and from Fort Rock and Christmas Valley. We have received Trophy sponsorships, Raffle items, give-away items for our "goody bags", and Cash Donations from many supporters, and each one is really appreciated! When we plan our Cruise Schedule for the year, we try to always include these businesses who have helped to sponsor our show. We feel that we need to support those who have supported us. For those businesses where a Cruise-in isn't feasable, we try to support them through our patronage and word-of-mouth good will.

Most of our Major Sponsors have been with us for many years: LES SCHWAB TIRES - MIDSTATE ELECTRIC - NAPA AUTO PARTS - LA PINE SEPTIC SERVICE - STAN RUSSELL CONSTRUCTION - CENTRAL OREGON ASPHALT SEALING - JOURNEY SALVAGE - ASPEN AUTO BODY - BI-MART; and BROMLEIGH CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION. These sponsors have made it possible for us to continue to host this fun show at the level we have, and to draw people to our town.

The High Lakes Car Club was started in 1975 with about six members, who loved & appreciated owning classic cars. It has grown to a membership of about 50 people now, who still have that original intent of the group....to preserve and further the appreciation and love of old cars, and to be an asset to the community! Hopefully, we have done this, and are still doing it.
